Participant Consent Form

Researchers:
This study is being conducted by students Nick Allen, Rachel Hamilton, Yumi Haskins, and Quinn Roraback as a part of PSY442, and is being supervised by Dr. Czopp (czoppa@wwu.edu) in the Department of Psychology at WWU.

Summary:
We are asking you to be in a research study. Participation is voluntary. The purpose of this form is to give you the information you will need to help you decide whether to participate. Please read the form carefully. You may contact the researcher about anything that is not clear. When we have answered all of your questions, you can decide if you want to be in the study or not. This process is called “informed consent.”

Purpose of the study:
We are interested in studying intimate relationship dynamics between men and women. 

Procedures:
Participation in this study will be no more than 10 minutes and you will receive 0.1 credit through SONA. You will answer multiple-choice and text-entry questions. If at any point in this study you encounter a question you do not want to answer, you may choose to skip it.

Risks of Participation:
This research does not pose any foreseeable risks beyond that which can be expected in day-to-day life.

Alternatives to Participation:
Students not wishing to participate in this research can earn credit alternatively through other studies offered or through an assignment provided by their course instructor.

Benefits of Participation:
You may have a better understanding of the research process in psychology.

Compensation for Participation:
You will receive 0.1 credits through SONA for your participation in this research.

Financial Conflict of Interest:
There are no financial conflicts of interest of any of the researchers involved in this study.

Data Security and Protections:
We take every precaution to protect your data, though no guarantee of security can be absolute. You will be assigned an ID number for this study, which will be used to label your data. Data will be kept indefinitely and stored on a secure server. Your information, with identifiers removed, may be used for future research without additional informed consent. There are some situations where we will have to release your information. If we learn that you intend to harm yourself or others, we must report that to the authorities. There are also times where studies are reviewed by Western Washington University to make sure that they are being conducted safely. In the event that this occurs, the reviewers will be responsible for protecting your information.

Withdrawal from the study:
You are free to withdraw your participation at any time, without penalty or loss of benefits to with you are otherwise entitled. If you withdraw from the study, we will destroy your data. Once the study ends, the link between your identifying information and data will be broken so we can no longer withdraw your data at that point.
